The $550 million comples featured 354,000 sq ft (32,900 m2) including 140,000 sq ft (13,000 m2) of entertainment and shopping space. A 97,000 sq ft (9,000 m2) casino was part of the resort's first phase which also included 1,500 hotel rooms.

Design: The hotel was built with a two story podium originally containing the lobby five restaurants ten ballrooms and a large convention hall and an acre of kitchens with the hotel rooms in narrow slabs above. To achieve this Lapidus employed three structural systems Floors 1 through 5 are steel concrete composite columns floors 5 through 29 are concrete shear walls and 29 to 51 reinforced concrete columns. At the time of its completion the building was the tallest concrete framed structure in the city. The main block of accommodation is a tall thin bent slab form angled towards the 52nd Street corner emphasized by the horizontal striped facade of strip windows and yellow glazed brick spandrels. On the north side facing Sixth Avenue a lower 25 story wing is placed at right angles to the street and inclides the entrance and lobby in a two story podium.

The base of the tower rises from a three story commercial building that houses a Burger King an ice cream parlor and some small stores. For 15 years the ground floor and basement levels housed Berlin's first Saturn electronics store (like Galeria Kaufhof a division of Metro AG but in March 2009 this relocated to a new adjacent building. The future of the hotel and especially the base building are uncertain plans to rebuild Alexanderplatz drawn up in the early 1990s envisage demolition of the hotel or at a minimum of the base building to enable erection of three new high rises. The complex was built from 1967 to 1970 in the course of the redevelopment of Alexanderplatz when it was located in East Berlin. It was designed by the team of Roland Korn Heinz Scharlipp and Hans Erich Bogatzky. However the design as built differs in the shape and location of the tower on the lot from that envisaged in the 1964 plan for redevelopment of the square.

The hotel owned the property immediately west of it which was the site of the Adelphi Theatre where episodes of The Honeymooners were filmed.

Volcano Bay is 27 acre water theme park that opened in 2016. It replaced Wet and Wild owned by Universal sa the resort's water park. Wet and Wild was founded in 1977 by Seaworld founder George Millay as one of the first major water parks. In 1998 Wet and Wild was acquired by Universal Parks and resorts adding it to Universal Orlando. There were eighteen water silides and attractions at the water park. Popular attractions included The Storm Bomb Bay Disco H20 Mach 5 and The Surge. Wet and Wild was located at the intersection of International Drive and Universal Boulevard about half a mile south of the Universal Orlando parking garage. Wet and Wild officially closed on December 31, 2016 due to the opening of Volcano Bay. It was announced on March 21, 2017 that the land once occupied by Wet and Wild would be transformed into Universal's seventh hotel. It was later learned that Universal would split the property into two hotels rather than one resort.

Lake Buena Vista is a small body of water located east of the Buena Vista Golf Course west of the crossing of State Road 535 and Interstate 4. The lake which was called Blake Lake before its acquisition by Disney was named for Buena Vista Street in Burbank California where Disney's corporate headquarters are located. Several Walt Disney Company business entities had names containing Buena Vista a Spanish phrase that means good view. In 2015 guide maps for the Disney Springs shopping dining and entertainment district started promoting Village Lake which the district and Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa borders as Lake Buena Vista.
